Ever since Confucianism came to Korea during the 14th century, confucianism became part of Korean people’s life. At first, confucianism was only famous and tough by Yang-ban (upper class) but not long after, confucianism quickly spread to common people. Confucianism in China started among the common people. Just like the Chinese, Korea is male dominant society and the family is the most important thing out of everything. Confucius say that one must take care of their family before they govern other people.

In Confucian tradition, the father is the head of the family and it is his responsibility to provide food, clothing and shelter, and to approve marriages of family members. No matter who they go out with, Koreans always ask their parent’s opinion to marry some one. Also, the eldest son has special duties for being the first son. The eldest son always had to became model for younger siblings and lead the family when father’s presence is absent. To Koreans, family welfare is much more important than the needs of the individual and members of the family are tied to each other because the actions of one family member reflect on the rest of the family. Most of characteristics of confucianism in Korea is almost identical to China but in most part, Korea has very strict rules and standards than China.
